Fantasy at Ida Lee

Just outside of Leesburg, Virginia there is a park called Ida Lee. It is a lovely place. We took a long walk all around the park and came to a little pond filled with the reflections of the surrounding tress.

The photo I originally took was just a placid scene, with the trees reflected in the water.

On the computer, I gave it this magical dimension, which shows the real spirits that reside in the trees.

 - Night comes to Uijongbu - by Tony Karp - Techno-Impressionist Museum - Techno-Impressionism
Night comes to Uijongbu

It is the winter of 1964. Uijongbu is a small, rural town, about 10 miles north of Seoul and 30 miles south of the DMZ. In front of me is a landscape of houses and farms. Behind me is the 121 Evac Hospital. The snowy scene is illuminated by the full moon. It's cold, and it's pretty dark, too., but I decide to take a shot anyway. The resulting slide, as you might imagine, was way underexposed. I held on to this slide for all of these years, hoping that some day there would be a way to see it properly.

Then I bought a film scanner for my computer. This was one of the first slides I scanned. At first, the results were disappointing -- muddy, dark, and grainy. But after some coaxing, using the tools on the computer, this is what emerged.

Sky Show - #1

Sometimes, the sky, the sun, and the clouds all combine to produce a show like this.

The trick is to record it so that you capture all the details of the show.

 - Golden trees - by Tony Karp - Techno-Impressionist Museum - Techno-Impressionism
Golden trees

This vertical panorama is so long that the only place in the gallery I could find to hang it was in along the stairway between the first and second floor.

When I first started shooting these vertical panoramas, i had no way to print them, as the printer I was using was limited to sheets of paper in fixed sizes.

Now I have a printer that takes paper in long rolls, allowing me to make prints of any length. This has given me a new freedom in being able to display pictures such as this one. Print Size: 17 x 59 inches

Print Price:  $450

 - Les Pompiers (The Firemen) - by Tony Karp - Techno-Impressionist Museum - Techno-Impressionism
Les Pompiers (The Firemen)

This started out as a tiny photograph from a collection of stock photos. I reduced it to Postscript, then filled in the colors. On the left side, I stripped out the colors and replaced them with black and white gradients.

If you watch closely, you will see the faces in the smoke and fire.

 - Evening in Flushing Meadow Park - by Tony Karp - Techno-Impressionist Museum - Techno-Impressionism
Evening in Flushing Meadow Park

When we lived in Queens we used to walk in Flushing Meadow Park. It was the closest thing we had to the country. The 1939 World's Fair was held heel, as was the one in 1964. When we were younger, we'd get up at sunrise and run around the lake before driving down to Wall Street.

Here is the park, seen at nightfall, sometime in the winter.

The dove in winter

Looking from my window on a snowy winter's day, I saw this dove sitting in one of our trees.

It looked so lonely and forlorn.

So I gave it an aura of heat and electricity to help carry it through 'til spring.
